 Blueberry

They conjure memories of blue-stained hands from picking wild berries and blue-stained tongues from popping every other one in our mouths. They remind us of the smell of homemade pies, scones, and muffins coming out of the oven in late summer. And they are proof that sometimes the best ingredients are the simple ones you can find right in your own backyard.

THE FIRST BLUEBERRY The wild blueberry is one of four berries native to North America, along with cranberries, blackberries, and raspberries. The domestication of blueberries was achieved by two strangers who joined forces in the early 1900s.

Frederick Coville, botanist from the USDA, Elizabeth White, cranberry farmer’s daughter from New Jersey, worked together to breed a commercial blueberry. Together, they cross-pollinated hundreds of blueberry plants to find ones that produced high yields of large, sweet berries.

By 1916, they had found the perfect blueberry variety, the Rubel, which quickly made its way to farms across the country, adapting to new climates as it went. There here are more than 25 different varieties of blueberries grown and sold around the country. New varieties have been developed to produce fruit at different times of year, from early spring to late fall, so we can enjoy them for as many months as nature will allow.

For example, blueberries grown in the southern US need 0 to 250 chill hours while blueberries grown in New England might need 900-1200 chill hours. Fun fact: For the best blueberry yields, it is recommended to have two to four honeybee hives per acre of blueberry bushes. In spring, the blueberry plant blooms with white cup-like flowers during a two- to four-week period. Once pollinated by honeybees, each flower eventually becomes one blueberry that starts out hard and green, then becomes reddish-purple, and finally turns a rich blue coated in a silvery sheen called the “bloom.”

The bloom signals that the blueberries are at their peak freshness and are ready to be harvested. Blueberries are picked by hand and the bushes are passed over with machines to collect any remaining ripe berries. After the harvest season is over in fall and winter, their leaves and stems turn a brilliant bright red. Blueberries also contain high amounts of vitamin C, which boosts our immune system, vitamin K, which promotes bone and blood health, and manganese, which promotes bone health and helps convert protein, carbs, and fat into energy.

Like many other fruits and vegetables, blueberries also contain high amounts of fiber, which is essential for heart and gut health while also keeping us feeling fuller for longer when incorporated into snacks and meals. Fresh blueberries are now available in US grocery stores year-round.

You can buy North American blueberries between April and September, and South American blueberries during the other months. More than half of all blueberries are sold fresh, but the rest are frozen or dried to be used in everything from smoothies to granola bars.

ALL ABOUT BLUEBERRIES Blueberries bring forth a sense of nostalgia. Once they are fully grown, more roots spread through the soil, which grow into new blueberry bushes nearby. Each new bush that grows from the roots of the original is genetically different from its neighbors.  Blueberry plants have chill hours, which are the number of hours the plant spends in weather below 45 degrees.

Why People Love to Hate Blueberry

These chill hours are essential for the blueberry plant because it keeps the plant dormant long enough until it is ready to produce new foliage and fruit in the spring. The chill hours change depending on the variety and location where it’s grown.

For example, blueberries grown in the southern US need 0 to 250 chill hours while blueberries grown in New England might need 900-1200 chill hours.

vaped some of this right before I decided to give myself an at-home spa night. I was feeling very relaxed after my bath and putting lotion on my face and rubbing it in felt incredible. I had my eyes closed and I was imagining that I was about 18 years old. I felt so young and beautiful. Then I opened my eyes and I looked like a female Jim Breuer. it was scary and kind of ruined the high. I kept trying to make my eyes more open so I would look better but I couldn’t. I just went to bed

I feel like I’m wearing a hat. But I’m definitely not wearing a hat.

Bubbles of fruit carry me towards the heaven where I shall finally meet THC Jesus. If you are reading this you have been blessed by him, puff puff pass it on

Please be careful with this strain! Let me start by saying I grew this myself from seed 100% organically, so I know it’s not laced or weird or mysterious in any way. Now listen up – this is a very potent strain man! We are experienced smokers and if we smoke too much Blueberry we all get crazy dizzy to the point of being sick (vomiting, weak, shakes, sweats) and passing out! It’s a little scary. If you do not respect how chronic this strain is, it can make you feel really bad and sick, like drinking too much alcohol. That said, it’s a very good strain if you use it responsibly. Moderation is key. You can get really, really high off Blueberry in a really good way. But, it has a dizzy negative that can spiral out of control if you take too much, and that can result in you passed out by a toilet somewhere and no one wants that. So please take it easy with this super potent strain until you know how much you can handle. We learned the hard way last night! Might just be this plant I grew but, just a word of warning man. Peace and stay safe.

The only thing that tops the magnificent blueberry smell are the feelings of relaxation, calm, and focus. It feels like a Sativa in many ways except that this can also ease me to sleep if that’s what I’m after. Nothing beats some sticky blueberry. The blueberry smell and taste are awesome!

Shit had me done on one hit. Powerful weed. Very powerful. Ready to smoke this whenever. Got the worst cotton mouth but that’s cool.

I used this original blueberry from Infinite Wellness Center in Lakewood, Co. to break a 5 day bought of mania. It took about 1.5 grams before it broke. I had heartburn for three solid days, it left as well. I had expected this would make me hungry, it didn’t. The flavor is blueberry, berries. Pretty soft smoke and doesn’t expand much but even as a long time everyday user it was long lasting. You will reach the point of therapeutic benefit, then another hit of the water pipe every 45 minutes, no joint pain, feel relaxed, no racing thoughts. The grower did a fine job and it was well cured and burned evenly. Thank you cannabis.

I had a hybrid variant of this – Thai Blueberry, c/o Boulder Botanicals – and, oh boy, is it knock-your-socks-off good. One of the most pleasant smelling strains, it also hits you quickly and intensely. The high is very uplifting, almost to the point of making you giggly, but doesn’t suppress your energy as much as more pure indicas I’ve had. It lasts a long time and is great to help boost conversation, creativity and, frankly, make you feel great.

Excellent medicinally and recreationally! Vaping this Blueberry makes me sooo relaxed and calm it almost feels like how I would imagine having 3 drinks and taking a Vicodin feels. No anxiety. At all! In that sense of feeling -though unlike alcohol not actually BEING- less inhibited by one’s inner criticism, it is like alcohol as well. Don’t worry though, unlike alcohol or narcotics this gal won’t inhibit your conscience or awareness itself, rather it is more the perception of it doing so that makes one feel so at ease and confident. I don’t recommend using this in the morning unless you have really bad nausea or a headache. By far Blueberry is the best nausea medication for me period. The vaped smell may smell like rotten papaya (Hash Plant has that same kind of smell going on too!), but somehow it calms my stomach down like no other. Other than mornings, Blueberry is great for all times of day.
